(MENAFN – Muscat Daily) Dutchman Erwin Koeman’s tenure as Oman head coach got off to a flying start as he led the Red Warriors to the title in the four-nation Airmarine Cup 2019 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday.
In the summit clash, Koeman’s men edged past Singapore 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Abdulaziz al Miqbali’s header put Oman ahead in the 22nd minute but a stoppage-time goal by Singapore’s Zulfahmi Arifin forced the match to go into a shootout.
Earlier on Wednesday, Koeman’s reign began with his team routing Afghanistan 5-0 to enter the final. In the third place playoff, Malaysia beat Afghanistan 2-1.
This was Oman’s first tournament after its exit in the round-of-16 at the Asian Cup in January under Pim Verbeek, who quit as coach soon after the Asian Cup.
